Under his belt {SF}

UNDER HIS BELT.*

Soundfile in WMA-format:

Under the belt

The player is up against hard resistance
He must use all his resolve.
The battle takes all his persistence
And there’s nobody else he can involve.
Finally he’s got an advantage
Maybe he can win the set.
It is game, set, and match
When a volley goes into the net.

He wants to win. He knows how it felt
Last time he got one under his belt.
He wants to win. He knows how it felt
Last time he got one under his belt.

The man thinks he is tough
He has learned he needs to be
It’s because life is rough
And there’s nothin’ that’s for free.
He has learned it the hard way
From plenty of lashes
Like the points that may
Be won or lost on smashes.

He wants to win. He knows how it felt
Last time he got one under his belt.
He wants to win. He knows how it felt
Last time he got one under his belt.

He is seeing her daily
Yet she is out of reach
Has she seen him? - Maybe.
But there is a breach.
His armour is broken
His weapons seem to be numb
His weakness may be a token
Of what might come.

But he wants to win. He knows how it felt
Last time he got one under his belt.
He wants to win. He knows how it felt
Last time he got one under his belt.

He feels it is all
It is all over now.
No-one will call
And no-one will cause a row.
So he’s gettin’ up
Out of his chair
They can’t make him stop
Lookin’ for life out there.

‘Cause he wants to win an’ he knows how it felt
Last time he got one under his belt.
He wants to win an’ he knows how it felt
Last time he got one under his belt.

Finn Langgaard, January 2006

Note*: The phrase was used in January 2006 by Australian tennis pro Lleyton Hewitt after a match in the Australian Open Tennis Championships which had been fairly even but which Hewitt had won eventually and he told reporters he was happy to get it under his belt.
